After the first full season under the new redshirt rules, we now know which Alabama players retained that year of eligibility.

A total of 12 Crimson Tide’s 2018 signing class will have four years left to play after their first season in Tuscaloosa. Of that group, six benefitted from the new regulation that allows players to appear in four or fewer games and retain that season as a potential redshirt.

Two sophomores -- tight end Major Tennison and defensive back Daniel Wright -- also played in four games after burning a redshirt the previous season and will get that year back. Wright played in four games before being suspended, then had season-ending surgery on a shoulder he injured in an August practice.
Linebackers Christopher Allen and Terrell Lewis can also get redshirts after both went down preseason with ACL injuries.

Eight freshmen participated in more than four games and will be sophomores in terms of eligibility. Only two started games with cornerback Patrick Surtain II getting 12 and Jaylen Waddle starting three. JUCO transfer Tevita Musika played in the first five games and just missed the redshirt cutoff.

That is a decent group of players who can reshirt. Some of them will provide depth next year and maybe even start. The young me who played as true freshmen and cannot reshirt filled much needed roles. The only exception is Musika, who probably should have kept the shirt. Looking forward to the additions from the most recent recruiting class and seeing where they stack up, this time next year.

To be clear... it's not "burned" a redshirt nor are they "candidates" for redshirts. You always have 5 years of scholarship to play 4 seasons. There is no such thing as a redshirt in NCAA rules... it's a term used by the media to describe when a kid DOESN'T meet the criteria to count the year towards the "play 4 seasons" part.... it always count toward the 5 year part.
