Probably getting pressure to fire the HC and didn't want to do it.

I don't think USC really cares much here. If anything, it helps rid them of a problem child.

More time for him to help read putts at Berckman's now.

I knew USC has hired a lot of people with former ties to the program. I did not realize it was this extensive.

All of those are probably reasons why, when it comes to athletics, USC is the University of Self Congratulation. The Trojans are addicted to their own glorious football past, marinating in it and continuously hiring from it. Since famed football coach Howard Jones died in 1941, 12 of the next 14 USC coaches had ties to the school as a player, assistant or both. The current string of former USC assistants turned head coaches is four, if you count interim Ed Orgeron in 2013.

As it turns out, in order to run a big time operation you actually have to show up!

Maybe just a name isn't enough. He and Magic Johnson can play 36 now, worry free.

Proper, now. Not just a search committee, but a proper search committee.

Most of you guys know how much I value Dennis Dodd's opinions on all things sports related, right?

Here's one of the reasons why. Yesterday I pointed out a trend that caught my eye:

12 of the next 14 USC coaches had ties to the school as a player, assistant or both.
What's Dodd's recommendation? Let's return to the well that's run dry.

Simple solution: The search should begin and end with USC senior associate AD and COO Steve Lopes. That's who USC passed over three years ago when Swann was hired. Lopes has been more than a loyal soldier as he's been with the Trojans for decades.

Yeah, that’s right Dennis, hire someone who’s been out of touch with the here and now for decades.
