Alabama has 76 players on NFL rosters with training camps slated to open across the league on Tuesday. No other college has more players in the pros. But those former Crimson Tide standouts are facing a training camp like no other in the NFL’s history.

On Friday, the NFL and the NFL Players Association announced they had reached an agreement on amendments to the collective bargaining agreement meant to help the league get to the start of the 2020 season in September during the coronavirus pandemic, including lots of testing before workouts will begin.

Among the changes from the NFL’s usual August: No preseason games will be played, and teams must reduce their offseason rosters, which can hold as many as 90 players, to 80 by Aug. 16. Under the plan, teams won’t begin padded practices until Aug. 17.

Those changes could make the uphill climb to reach the 53-player regular-season roster even steeper for undrafted rookies.

Alabama has 11 players on NFL rosters who played for the Crimson Tide last season (plus Jalen Hurts, who played three years at Alabama before transferring to Oklahoma for the 2019 campaign). All of those players were drafted except two – safeties Shyheim Carter and Jared Mayden, who are with the New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers, respectively.

New players didn’t get to show coaches what they could do during the offseason program either, because the pandemic caused teams to confine that part of the 2020 preparations to online work.

Undrafted rookies aren’t the only players who could be hampered by lack of opportunities in their bids to make the team. Cornerback Saivion Smith is trying to catch on with the Dallas Cowboys after playing in the XFL’s five-week season earlier this year. Running back Derrick Gore is back for another try with the Los Angeles Chargers. Guard Chance Warmack is looking for a fresh start with the Seattle Seahawks after not playing in 2019. The Washington Football Team has the most Crimson Tide alumni on its roster with 10. The New Orleans Saints are the only NFL team without anyone who played at Alabama.

Last season, 62 Alabama alumni played in at least one NFL regular-season game, the most from any college program in 2019.

For each of the past three years, more Alabama alumni have played in the NFL than had ever done so previously. In 2017, 44 former Tide standouts played in at least one NFL regular-season game. In 2018, 52 did, and 2019 eclipsed that by 10 players.

Alabama's NFL contingent includes 10 safeties, nine wide receivers, eight defensive tackles, eight running backs, seven cornerbacks, seven inside linebackers, five guards, five outside linebackers, four offensive tackles, three centers, three quarterbacks, three tight ends, two defensive ends, one long snapper and one punter.

Training camp is arriving without four former Alabama players having NFL homes after appearing in games last season. Missing are linebacker Mark Barron, defensive tackle Marcell Dareus and cornerbacks Cyrus Jones and Dre Kirkpatrick.

Glad to see Tony Brown got on with a team. Is Dre Kirkpatrick a free agent still? Pretty shocked no one has signed him. The Falcons sure could use some experience at the position.

I wonder what my old boss would have told me if I had opted out from my job. Don't let the door hit you in the ass.
And there would not have been a stipend. Virus or no virus. This shit gone far past ridiculous.
