The Crimson Tide makes its 2020 home debut next weekend, hosting the Easton Bama Bash

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Alabama had the potential go-ahead run at the plate in the bottom of the sixth but the late rally fell just short as Oklahoma State edged out Alabama, 4-1, Saturday afternoon to close out play at the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational.

Alabama (4-5) fell behind after Oklahoma State (5-3) scored a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings. In the bottom of the sixth, the Crimson Tide looked to rally loading the bases with one out. A bases-loaded walk to junior Maddie Morgan pushed a run across but an inning-ending double play ended the rally. The Cowgirls added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh and Alabama stranded a runner on in the home half of the inning with the final score as 4-1.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Senior Bailey Hemphill was 1-for-2 with a walk, stretching her reached-base streak to seven games
  • Freshman Lexi Kilfoyl pitched 4.0 relief innings with two runs allowed on four hits with six strikeouts, ending the weekend with five runs allowed, four earned, with 16 strikeouts across 14.2 innings pitched
SCORING SUMMARY
  • T3rd | With two in scoring position and nobody out, a slow roller on the infield gave the runner from third enough time to come home and score on the infield RBI single (Alabama 0, Oklahoma State 1)
  • T4th | A groundout with the bases loaded doubled the Cowgirls' lead (Alabama 0, Oklahoma State 2)
  • B6th | Back-to-back singles and a fielding error loaded the bases with one out for junior Maddie Morgan, who drew a walk to move everyone up 60 feet (Alabama 1, Oklahoma State 2)
  • T7th | Sydney Pennington hit a leadoff solo home run to left field (Alabama 1, Oklahoma State 3)
  • T7th | With two in scoring position and two out, a wild pitch brought an insurance run home for the Cowgirls (Alabama 1, Oklahoma State 4)

Don’t have a true “hitting coach”, but needs one badly....
This has been the case early in the season for the last 4 years... the biggest problem with the girls is the “rat poison” they received pre-season from Murphy himself

Chemistry looks bad off. May take some more time for the new catcher (Doerr) and the pitchers to gel ... batting woes, i don't have a clue, sometimes it looks like we couldn't hit water if we fell out of boat in the middle of the Atlantic.

The preseason #1 isn't playing like the preseason #1.

In my view, that's exactly what we're seeing along with a few other things. Let's not dismiss the fact they are playing a much tougher schedule this season than last: MUCH tougher.

Doerr getting in the lineup is a good thing for the infield/defense. Their getting experienced play on the corners and in the middle with Skylar.

I don't see Tana in sync yet but I take that in context with the rest she's been getting over the fall months. After her time with USWNT she needed the rest but just as it's the case with any pitcher it'll take a bit of time to shake all the rust off.

Krystal, Sarah, Lexi, and Tana will all take a little time to get in sync with Abby.

As long as we see it starting to come together when we get into SEC play...back in Rhodes this weekend for the Easton Bama Bash should pay dividends.
