In addition to figuring out SOME way to regulate guns to help keep them out of the hands of the CRAZIES (I don't presume to know how; obviously people can do what they want and if they want a gun, they'll get one somehow ..), we need to improve the mental health support system in this country .. It's in shambles, and a lot of these shooters (Tuscon, Aurora, Virginia Tech, etc) had a history of mental illness that was largely ignored .. Maybe if we could reach out to more people, and help them, we could prevent more of these tragedies from happening. I believe gun violence is a serious issue but I think it is also really important to look at the type of folks using these as weapons against humanity. We must look at the whole picture and do SOMETHING.
I live in DC, and last night, there were a TON of anti- and pro- gun folks protesting outside the White House along with candlelit vigils. If our first reaction as a nation to a massacre is "UH OH CRAZY LIBERALS COMING TO TAKE MY GUNS AWAY!" or "UH OH CRAZY CONSERVATIVES COMING TO GIVE ME A GUN!", there is something seriously wrong with us. Before we make it into a huge divisive political issue we should address it as the tragedy it is and help the community ..
I literally cried for an hour straight last night .. This is just the most disturbing, depressing thing .. But I guess there is hope in it too. In the teachers/school admin who rushed towards, not away from, the chaos. In the teachers/school admin who sacrificed their lives saving their students. In the teachers/school admin who did the right thing and kept their students calm. And in the first responders who arrived on the scene. I hope we as a nation can learn something from this tragedy re: preventing violence, but also in how important our teachers are ..
Please pray for this community, the lives lost, and the lives broken. Keep them in your thoughts.

Most people aren't calling for the complete ban of firearms, that won't solve this and really nothing is going to complete solve it but we can do things to try and stop more things like this from happening. In my opinion assault weapons need to be banned completely, 100% the assault weapon ban should have never been allowed to expire to begin with. I've heard idiots try and say they go hunting with assault rifles, unreal... if you need an assault rifle to kill a damn deer maybe you shouldnt be hunting. Also, anyone that gets a firearm should have to get a permit and to OWN a firearm and to get that permit you need to take a firearm safety class (we dont let people drive vehicles around without taking safety classes why should people be allowed to own a gun without doing the same) and a mental health exam. People with mental illnesses and obviously felons should not be allowed to own a firearm, period.
Also, mental health needs to be looked at. And the way people secure their weapons.
