    Nov. 14, 2012

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – University of Alabama head men’s basketball coach Anthony Grant announced the signing of two student-athletes to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday, during the first day of the early signing period. Center Jimmie Taylor and forward Shannon Hale are slated to join the Crimson Tide on the court for the 2013-14 season.

"We are very excited to have Jimmie and Shannon sign National Letter of Intent’s with the University of Alabama today,” Grant said. “They are both outstanding young men who come from quality families. They also have a passion and excitement level for Alabama and our basketball program.”

Taylor is a four-star recruit and brings an inside presence for Grant’s squad next season. The cousin of former Tide standout and Southeastern Conference Player of the Year (2002) Erwin Dudley, Taylor is rated as the No. 6 center in the nation and No. 30 overall prospect by rivals.com. In March of 2011, he was selected to the USA Developmental National Team, and has twice been named as a 3A first team all-state performer.

Week 6 provided some surprises, mainly at how well Florida played LSU, and how thoroughly South Carolina dominated Georgia. Will the upset bug be out there again this week? On to our picks.

    First the OOC games:

    Stanford at Notre Dame

Stanford was discounted early in the year because Andrew Luck now plays on Sundays, but as the Trojans can attest they are still plenty tough. Meanwhile, Notre Dame, lightly regarded for several years, has steadily climbed up the poll rankings, showing an unexpectedly stout defense. Especially at ...

Our favorite team is off this week, but there are some dynamite SEC games, and a couple of block buster games nationally.

    Oklahoma at Texas Tech

Completely under the radar, TT has started the season undefeated, and leading the nation in total defense. Granted, this has been against weak opposition. Meanwhile. Oklahoma is coming off a disappointing loss to Kansas State, and another loss would doom their once high hopes for this season. I think that the Sooner Schooner will get back on track this week. Week 4 had a couple of surprises. South Carolina handled Missouri much easier than I expected, and Auburn gave LSU all that they wanted before succumbing.

This week there are fewer games to pick, as four teams have the week off, and two have oot of conference foes.

    Arkansas at Texas A&M:

The Razorbacks are reeling after dropping three games in a row. Their NC aspirations are in tatters, and many are calling for John L Smith to be fired immediately. Meanwhile, the Aggies are looking for their first SEC win as well, having lost a tough one to Florida in their SEC opener. ...

There are four conference games this week. Two of them look like big mismatches. the other two will serve to separate the pretenders from the contenders.

    Kentucky at Florida

The Gators have gained strength each week, and already have two nice conference wins under their belt. The Wildcats, meantime, are looking just as inept as they did a year ago. Florida has shown a powerful running game in SEC road tests at aTm and UT. At the Swamp, this week, they will make Kentucy a road kill rather than a road test.

Week two was intersting, to say the least. We had the stunner in little rock, Vandy's 4th quarter fade, and debut games for the SEC's newest members. This week has two major confernce clashes, as well as some interesting intersectional games, plus several of the early season warm up variety.

    Louisanna Monroe at Auburn

Auburn's performance last Saturday against MSU was miserable on every level, and the outlook for this weekend doesn't look a lot better. La. Monroe is coming off a huge road win this past weekend. Next week they have their home opener against Baylor. It is the old "beware of the sandwich game" scenario. The Warhawks need to stay on their ...

This season started a perfect 14-0 on the WL. Your old prognosticator is on a roll, though I admit that most of the first week's picks weren't that tough. This week even picking the W/L is much tougher. If you want to pick along with us, just click the link in each prediction paragraph.

Week two features three conference games, and all three look interesting:

    Florida at aTm

Since Isaac forced postponement of the Aggies opener against La Tech, it is tough for me to get a handle on them. Kyle Field is a notoriously tough place on visitors, and aTm does have a lot of pride and tradition going for it.

Florida struggled most of the day against an outmanned opponent. Neither QB seemed to be in take charge mode. Their running game did ...
