Twenty-four teams, 126 individuals set for 72-hole competition

All the heavyweights of NCAA women’s golf will be out when the Division I championships get under way Tuesday morning on the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.

And only one fact is certain: any number of teams and individual student-athletes are poised to shine. Twenty-four teams and 126 individuals will compete in 72 holes of championship competition during the course of four days. In the team play, the low-four individual scores for each team will count in each day’s total score.

Top-ranked Southern California, the 2013 Pac-12 and NCAA West Region champion with a school-record six victories, leads the nation with an active streak of seven consecutive NCAA top-five finishes. It won the title in 2003 and in 2008 and finished second by one stroke both in 2010 to Purdue and 2012 to Alabama.

Freshman Annie Park finished first at the Pac-12 and NCAA West Region events and is seeking her third consecutive individual title in Athens. Another freshman, Kyung Kim, shot a school-record 63 on the final day of the NCAA West Regional to climb into a tie for third.

Alabama athletics director Bill Battle isn't saying how much new women's basketball coach Kristy Curry will be paid, but he is saying that plans for a renovated or new baseball stadium are being discussed. The timetable for an improved baseball facility is two to five years, Battle said Thursday before a Crimson Caravan appearance at Turner Field.

Curry was introduced as Alabama's new coach Thursday. She comes from Texas Tech, where she reportedly was going to be paid $750,000 for the upcoming season. Curry replaces Wendell Hudson, whose total compensation for his fifth and final season was $295,000.

Battle was asked if Curry is taking a pay cut.

"That contract is still being negotiated, and that will be released at a later date," he said.

Alabama is paying gymnastics coach Sarah Patterson $330,000 per year. Softball coach Patrick Murphy is making $240,000 and women's golf coach Mic Potter is making $145,000. Each of the three won a national championship in 2012.

If you follow college football at all, you probably are familiar with last week’s story out of Wisconsin, where Barry Alvarez was quoted as saying that Big 10 schools would not schedule FCS opponents going forward:

“The nonconference schedule in our league is ridiculous,” Alvarez said on WIBA-AM. “It’s not very appealing…
“So we’ve made an agreement that our future games will all be Division I schools. It will not be FCS schools.”

    A couple of quick points:
    - Obviously, FCS schools are members of Division I. You would think the director of athletics at a D-1 institution would know that.
    - Alvarez claimed that the Big 10′s non-conference schedule “is ridiculous”, yet he is the same AD who in recent years scheduled multiple FCS schools from all over the country, including The Citadel, Wofford, Northern Iowa, South Dakota, Austin Peay, and Cal Poly. The Badgers will play Tennessee Tech in 2013.

Alvarez’s comment drew a lot of attention, understandably so, although it is not a lock that the Big 10 will enforce such an edict. Northern Iowa’s AD was blunt: ...

As a high school senior from Woodbury, Long Island, some 30 miles east of New York City, Daniel Machover’s top choice for a college might strike some as curious: the University of Alabama.

A big college football fan, Machover paid a visit to Tuscaloosa, where he had already applied and been accepted, and found the “rah rah” atmosphere of Crimson Tide country everything he expected. But while it was football that had initially piqued his interest, he found much more to ultimately sway him: Beautiful campus, warm weather and friendly people.

“There was no culture shock at all, everyone was just real nice,” he says. Alas, Machover won’t get to live the southern dream. At least not this year. As decision time neared, his dad Geoff decided that for his college visits and his son’s treks back home, road trips beat flights. He nixed Tuscaloosa in favor of the University of Delaware. “I’d pick Alabama,” says Daniel. “But he’s paying the bill.”

What’s notable about Machover’s first college choice is that, as a non-southeasterner these days, he’s far from alone. Head football coach Nick Saban has done the near-impossible at the University of Alabama: orchestrated a seismic shift in the meaning of “Roll Tide.”

True freshman Emma Talley shoots 67 to tie for the 18-hole individual lead

    AUBURN, Ala. -
The top-seeded Alabama women's golf team performed exactly how you would expect the nation's second-ranked team to perform in the opening round of the NCAA East Regional at the Auburn University Club on Thursday.

The Crimson Tide fired the program's lowest round in NCAA tournament play with an 11-under-par 277, which also matches the lowest round of the season and the second-lowest round in school history.

"I had a good feeling about our scoring opportunities on this golf course," Alabama head coach Mic Potter said. "It reminded me a little of the course at the PING/ASU Invitational, and we played well there. We have a lot of girls that have been in this type of situation before, whether it was in junior golf, the U.S. Open's or national championships.

"They know what the standards are that we want to play to and, that is to focus on every shot. It is not winning regionals, it is about scoring to the best of their ability, and they did a great job using their capabilities today."
